Lloyd A. Jacobs, MD stepped away from his position as President of the University of Toledo in 2014, after having led a vigorous process of growth and transformation to establish a new vision, a new identity, and a new level of educational, research, and clinical health services quality and excellence. Dr. Jacobs began his appointment as UT’s 16th president in 2006, when the former Medical University of Ohio, of which he was President / CEO, and UT merged, and he was selected to lead the newly merged university.
A strategic plan entitled Directions 2011 was approved unanimously by the Board of Trustees in January 2011. The plan articulates UT’s mission, vision and institutional core values and identifies goals to be met in order to establish UT as one of the great public metropolitan research universities in the world.
Dr. Jacobs worked to strengthen undergraduate education, graduate and professional education and scholarship, research, and service across UT’s 10 professional colleges; to make the University more affordable, accessible, sustainable, and student-centered; and to encourage exploration of how UT can create collaborative programs and synergies involving the arts, humanities, science, medicine, technology and other fields. Under his leadership, the University also worked to elevate the quality of health care in northwest Ohio, by developing partnerships with health care providers in the region.
Under Dr. Jacobs’ leadership, the University strengthened patient-care programs at UT Medical Center; focused on improving the learning and living environments on and near campus; and earned several key institutional accreditations. He celebrated successful completion of the largest capital fund campaign in the University’s history (more than $106MM); and entered into research and educational agreements with universities in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
The University operates three campuses and has an annual operating budget of more than $700MM. In recent years, the University invested more than $200MM to construct new buildings and renovate existing academic buildings, classrooms and athletic venues. At the same time, Dr. Jacobs made it a top priority to catapult UT in technology and sciences, focusing particularly on the University’s longstanding international leadership in solar and alternative-energy research.
The University and the City of Toledo have an effective partnership to improve neighborhoods and expand commercial activity near Main Campus. UT also is working to increase the number of new local companies based on UT research, through UT Innovation Enterprises, Inc.
Prior to his tenure at UT, President Jacobs became the sixth president of the Medical College of Ohio—later renamed Medical University of Ohio—in 2003. Before coming to Toledo, he was Chief Operating Officer of University of Michigan Health System, one of the US’s largest systems, and Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan School of Medicine.
Currently, Dr .Jacobs is engaged in Consulting, mentoring and writing. Recently released is his “Practical Ethics for the Surgeon” published by Wolters Kluwer. This work is a compilation of ethics specifically for the surgeon but of interest to the public as will.
A vascular surgeon, Dr. Jacobs began his academic medicine career at Wayne State University in 1974—and followed 15 years there with 15 years at the University of Michigan. He is the author of six book chapters and 50+ articles in peer-reviewed medical/scientific publications such as Journal of Vascular Surgery, Surgery, and American Surgeon. He has been a featured speaker at dozens of national medical and scientific meetings on topics such as vascular disease, managed care, medical leadership, health care quality measurement and assurance.
