Jose Luis Malo de Molina

Jose Luis Malo de Molina was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1950. Doctor in Economics (with Distinction) from Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). He lectured in Applied Economics at UCM until 1985.

He joined the Banco de España Research Department in 1982 as an economist, where he held various positions of responsibility. He was director of the Monetary and Financial Studies Department until July 1992.

In July 1992 he was appointed Director-General of the Banco de España DG Economics, Statistics and Research and a member of the Bank’s Executive Commission. He accompanies the Governor the ECB Governing Council meetings, as established in the ECB rules of procedure.

He has represented Spain in the committees of various international organizations (OECD, BIS, EU, EMI and ECB). He also sits, since 1992, on the Spanish Higher Council of Statistics and is Chairman of the FEDA Scientific Committee. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Central de Estudios Monetarios y Financieros (CEMFI) and of the Board of the International Center for Monetary and Banking Studies (ICMB). In 2011 he was appointed chairman of the Budget Committee of the European Central Bank (BUCOM).

He has published many books, articles and working papers addressing the labor market, monetary policy, the financial system, European integration and the Spanish economy.
