John Calverly

John Calverly is the head of macroeconomic research at Standard Chartered Bank and co-leads a team of 25 economists analysing the world economy and focusing on Standard Chartered’s main markets in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. He has over 30 years experience as a business economist and spends most of his time on special reports. Recent topics have included understanding QE, the future of energy prices, economic reform in emerging markets, a new index of sustainable development, the global economic super-cycle and world housing markets.

John joined the global research group of Standard Chartered Bank when it acquired American Express Bank from American Express Company in 2008. At AEB he was chief economist and strategist. John joined AEB in London in 1980, following earlier experience at The Economist Intelligence Unit and HM Treasury.

John is a consultant to CFA Institute on the CFA economics curriculum. During 2000-3, he was chairman of the UK Society for Business Economists and from 1997-2007 a council member of SUERF, the European Money and Finance Forum. He is a member of CABE and NABE.

He frequently speaks at conferences and appears on TV. Born and raised in the UK, educated at Cambridge University and Washington University in St. Louis, he now lives in Toronto. He has written several books:
