In response to the high inflation of the 1970s, giving central banks operational independence to pursue a mandate of price stability was widely embraced as a means of restoring price stability. Up until the Great Financial Crisis, this approach seemed successful. Since then, experience has challenged that model in a number of ways.

What are defining characteristics of an independent central bank? What is the appropriate scope of activities for an independent central bank? Join the Global Interdependence Center’s College of Central Bankers for a webinar to explore these questions with College of Central Bankers Fellows, Patrick Honohan, Former Governor of Central Bank of Ireland, Athanasios Orphanides, Ph.D., Former Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus, José M. González-Páramo, Former Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank,  and Charles Plosser, Former President & CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia,  as a part of our College of Central Bankers Institutional Alignment Project. This webinar will be moderated by College of Central Bankers Advisory Board Member, Herb Taylor, Ph.D., Secretary of the Federal Advisory Council.

About the Institutional Alignment Project: The College of Central Bankers is actively conducting a multiyear global discussion centered around the overarching question of whether national and international policymaking institutions are sufficiently equipped to address the impacts of high debt levels, digital currencies, unsupervised algorithmic trading, inequality, climate change, and changing demographics. This Project addresses whether long-standing international accords need to be modified and/or whether new global agreements are necessary. Working collaboratively, the CCB and its community is bringing this discussion and other activities to the global stage, beginning with a series of virtual events.
