Michael Heavener is executive vice president and head of
Wachovia’s Global Financial Institutions and Trade Division
responsible for the company’s global financial institutions,
trade services, and multilateral banking businesses.
Mr. Heavener previously served as
executive vice president and head of First Union’s
International Group prior to its merger with Wachovia; and as head of
CoreStates’ International Group before its acquisition by
First Union.
Mr. Heavener began his career with
Philadelphia National Bank (later to become CoreStates Bank) in 1968,
following service with the U.S. Army in Korea and Vietnam. Beginning in
1972, he established representative offices in Bangkok and Manila,
serving as the bank’s first representative for Southeast Asia.
In 1978, Mr. Heavener was appointed
general manager of Philadelphia International Bank (later CoreStates
Bank International) in New York. In 1980, he was named by PNB as
manager for Europe, Canada and the Middle East.
In 1985, Mr. Heavener assumed
responsibility for the bank’s domestic financial institutions
division; and in 1990, he was promoted to executive vice president and
into the role which he’s held since then.
Mr. Heavener serves on a number of
internal boards supporting Wachovia activities in international
markets, Wachovia International Banking Corporation in Charlotte, and
London-based Wachovia International Securities, Ltd., among others.
In service within the industry, Mr. Heavener has served on the boards
of The Clearing House Interbank Payments Company (CHIPCo) and the IBOS
Association of Banks. For more than ten years, Mr. Heavener also worked
actively in support of the Bankers' Association for Finance and Trade
as Secretary/Treasurer and as a Board and Executive Committee member.
In the community, Mr. Heavener remains
an active supporter of those organizations working to extend
Philadelphia’s engagement with the world, The Global
Interdependence Center, Philadelphia Committee on Foreign Relations,
International Visitors Council and World Affairs Council.
