BP has bought political peace with the Obama
administration for now, James Lucier from Capital Alpha Partners told CNBC Thursday. It is some degree of closure,
but if BP can’t cap the well, the company will be in trouble again, Lucier said. Tai Hui from Standard Chartered Bank also

Dr. James Bullard, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis
In his presentation, Dr. Bullard discussed possible exit strategies for the Federal Reserve Banks. After discussing the pros and cons to three different strategies, he concluded by showing that he favored the idea that in order for the Fed to reduce its balance sheets, the most effective option would be to sell assets as they deem appropriate.

The Business Forum for Liberia: Exploring Economic Growth, Private Enterprise, & Job Creation
The Global Interdependence Center, the Government of the Republic of Liberia through its Embassy in Washington, DC., in partnership with the City of Philadelphia Mayor’s Commission on African and Caribbean Immigrant Affairs, the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), the U.S. Department of Commerce, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and other participating sponsors held a business forum with the goal of addressing strategic initiatives instituted by the Liberian government to develop a vibrant private sector whereby small and mid-sized businesses would operate as the driving force to create jobs and expand economic activities.

The 27th Annual Monetary and Trade Conference: The Financial System, Banks & Economy: After the Storm…Where Are We Now?

This half day conference was held at the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank in partnership with the CFA Society of Philadelphia. This focused on the food price inflation crisis as it pertains to investment in sectors tied to food and water, and the geopolitical ramifications of increased cost and decreased supply. GIC Presents Martin Feldstein with the Frederick Heldring Award for Global Leadership
On December 18th The Global Interdependence Center presented Martin Feldstein with the Frederick Heldring Award for Global Leadership. Martin Feldstein is the is the George F. Baker Professor of Economics at Harvard University and President Emeritus of the National Bureau of Economic Research. In addition to serving as President and CEO of the NBER, throughout his prestigious career, Dr. Feldstein has been Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, President Reagan's Chief Economic Advisers, and President of the American Economic Association.

CENTRAL BANKERS SERIES- The Chilean Economy in the 21st Century featuring José De Gregorio Governor of the Central Bank of Chile
In conjunction with the Embassy of Chile, and the weeklong “Viva Chile in Philadelphia” celebration, GIC welcomed Jose De Gregorio, Governor of the Central Bank of Chile. Governor De Gregorio’s presentation entitled “The Chilean Economy in the Current Global Financial Crisis” highlighted not only the resiliency of the Chilean economy, but the important economic ties between his nation and the Philadelphia region. In particular, he noted that 65% of Chilean fruit imported to the United States arrives through the Delaware River port, and is responsible for some 8,000 jobs in the region.

GIC Travels Abroad in Israel
On November 3-4, GIC held its first conference in the Middle East. The two day conference was held in partnership with Hebrew University and featured Jeffrey Lacker, President of the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank, and Zvi Eckstein, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Israel. Other presentations focused on Israel’s high tech industry and included a private tour of the new Intel facility.

GIC Abroad: Cape Town, South Africa
On March 27th and 28th, GIC partnered with the University of Cape Town for a conference entitled "Monetary Policy in Sub Saharan Africa: Practice and Promise." GIC's delegation included Charles Plosser, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, who held a joint presentation on global monetary policy with Jurgen Stark, member of European Central Bank's Executive Board. The conference was held at the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town and was generously sponsored by Absa Capital.

Richard W. Fisher, President Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas
GIC was honored to host Richard W. Fisher, full voting member of the FOMC and President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. President Fisher met with a student roundtable at Drexel University, including representatives from Drexel University’s LeBow College of Business, University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, and Temple University’s Fox Business School. This event was followed by a luncheon meeting at the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank, where President Fisher presented his thoughts on monetary policy, followed by a lively discussion on issues ranging from global markets to immigration.
