William A. Strauss Can U.S. Manufacturing Compete in a Global Marketplace?

On April 9, 2008 The Global Interdependence Center hosted William Strauss, Senior Economist and Economic Advisor of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. In his presentation, entitled “Is the US Losing its Manufacturing Base?” Strauss argues that manufacturing output in the U.S. has never been higher, and that the most recent decline in manufacturing was cyclical, not structural, with profits in manufacturing outperforming profits for the rest of the nation. Strauss concludes that the trends that have dominated manufacturing for the past 60 years are suggestive of the future for U.S. manufacturing: ever increasing output with employment representing a smaller share of total employment.

February 27, 2008, Dr. Yannos Papantoniou The Future of Economic Integration in View of the Enlargement of the European Union

Dear Friends, It can be argued that there is no higher form of interdependence than the political integration of nation states. This very process has been taking place on the European continent for decades, with an ever quickening pace. GIC has consistently been on the cutting edge of this issue, providing programs on economic and political integration, and the expansion of NATO and the EU. Continuing on this topic, the Center was proud to co-host a breakfast roundtable with LeBow College of Business welcoming Dr. Yannos Papantoniou, Former Minister of Defense and National Economy of Greece. Dr. Papantoniou was one of the architects of Greece’s integration into the European Union and adoption of the Euro. In addition to his work with the Greek economy, he helped to establish the European Defense Agency. February 7, 2008, Dr. Jorge Daly, Small Business, Policy, and Exports: The Case of Chile.

On Thursday, February 7th, the Global Interdependence Center hosted renowned political economist Jorge Daly.  Dr. Daly provided a cogent and accessible overview of the development of the Chilean economy over the past few decades as it pertains to the role of small and medium size enterprise exports.  Dr. Daly’s research shows a strong corollary between  the increase of small and medium enterprise exports, GDP growth, and decline in inflation.  This case of Chile is relevant both globally and locally, as  this Latin American success story finds other nations emulating the policies and practices of Chile in the hopes of experiencing similar growth.  Locally, Chilean imports account for 20% of the goods arriving in the Philadelphia port.

GIC would like to thank the Consulate of Chile in Philadelphia, the Chilean Embassy, USAID Business Growth Initiative, Weidemann Associates for their support of this program.

January 30, 2008, Christopher Whalen Managing Director, Institutional Risk Analytics."The Global Risk of Subprime"

Dear Members and Friends,

Committed to its dialogue on the global economy, The Global Interdependence Center was honored to host Christopher Whalen’s remarks on the subprime crisis and its global implications.  Speaking on the unstable condition of the securitization markets created by subprime lending, Chris laid out a clear situation for a very complex state of affairs.  The pressures forced upon U.S. financial institutions have obvious global consequences reaching beyond the banking industry, effecting consumer spending, the global economy, and international markets in all parts of the world.  According to Chris, the solution to this crisis lays in effective leadership within the political and financial communities of industrialized nations – to which GIC members can play a part by addressing such issues as the transparency of complex financial products, accountability of ratings agencies, and necessity of regulation in these high-risk financial areas.  The event was well attended, and it was a great opportunity for members to engage in the current economic discourse.

Today was another great event with the Global Interdependence Center!  We were honored to host Dr. Paul Bennett at the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank this afternoon.  The title of Dr. Bennett's speech was "Global Stock Exchanges and How They are Evolving," an apt topic for the Chief Economist of an enormously important global stock exchange, NYSE/Euronext.  Paul outlined the main forces driving these mergers, including automation, capturing economies of scale, and the increased pressure to work globally from the market's stakeholders: listing companies and traders.

Global stock exchanges, international corporations and information-empowered individuals are all part of the new system of global dialogue that GIC seeks to study, work with, and render accessible to our members.  With only a few weeks left in 2007, we still have one great event to go.  On December 4th, our guest will be Paul Walsh of Storm Exchange.  We have a full slate of programming for 2008, so please check our website regularly to find out our latest events.
